Croydon Day Surgery in North-East Melbourne Hepatitis C Infections Rise

The number of women who have contracted hepatitis C after being treated at a Melbourne abortion clinic has risen to 49.

The women, who were all patients at the Croydon Day Surgery in Melbourne’s north-east, are believed to have been infected after dealing with anaesthetist Dr James Peters in 2008 and 2009.

Melbourne Hepatitis C Infections RiseThe Department of Health has ended its investigation into the outbreak after testing more than 3,000 patients at the Croydon clinic and 1,000 more from other clinics where Dr Peters worked.

Authorities were unable to contact 241 women who were treated by Dr Peters, and another 247 women who were tested declined to provide their results to the Department of Health.

A further 19 women who had contact with Dr Peters have contracted hepatitis C, but the virus has cleared their blood stream so it could not be traced to Dr Peters.

A police investigation is continuing but Dr Peters has not been charged. He was suspended from practicing medicine in February, 2010.

Victoria’s chief health officer, Dr John Carnie, says the department has done all it can to determine how many women were infected.

“This is an extremely traumatic and upsetting episode for these patients,” he said. -Read more of Alison Savage’s report at ABC News.
